Chiron Retrograde – Unifying The Parts

Chiron turns retrograde on July 1st at 28 degrees Pisces. You have a five-month window of opportunity to dive into the healing waters of Chiron and clean any wounds that stop you from integrating all the parts of yourself, and become a whole healthy human being.

There is no wonder the Chiron’s symbol is a key. Chiron unlocks the secret doors of our psyche, allowing the divine energy of the outer planets to flow into what we call the reality of our body, symbolized by Saturn.

Chiron turns retrograde at the 28 degree of the Solar Eclipse in Leo on August 21st, and will form a quincunx aspect to the Solar Eclipse.

Although quincunxes are considered difficult aspects, the quincunx is actually Chiron’s natural aspect (Chiron is believed to rule Virgo, which is the 6th sign from Aries, representing one of the two quincunxes by sign. The other one is Scorpio / Pluto). The message of Chiron aspecting the Solar Eclipse is: only by unifying all the broken parts of the self (Chiron) you can become a divine human being and actualize your life’s purpose (North Node in Leo).

Quincunxes bring together two very different elements – for example the Fire / Cardinal energy of Aries with the Earth / Mutable energy of Virgo, respectively with the Water / Fixed energy of Scorpio. Any other aspects, the sextiles, squares, trines or oppositions have at least one thing in common, either the element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) or the quadruplicity (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable). The quincunx is the only aspect that brings together two completely alien energies.

From all possible configurations, the quincunx is the alchemist who brings cooperation by combining forces, by moderating between the outside world and the inside world. To make such different energies work together requires compromise and cooperation, but the gifts are more than we can imagine. A quincunx can literally turn rust into gold.

The quincunx also represents the frontier to the “other side”, to the place we know nothing about. Chiron orbits betweeen Saturn and Uranus / Neptune. Saturn is the last planet we can see with the naked eye in th sky, and his beautiful rings are a metaphor for the limitations of our human existence.

The outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) represent what is beyond the known, out of what we can grasp with our limited cognitive functions. Chiron is therefore the link between the two worlds, and his role is to channel the ethereal, intangible energy of the outer planets into the structures, the realities of Saturn. That’s why Chiron makes such a great healer, especially in the energy healing field.

The other quincunx planet, Pluto, is the link between our solar system and everything that lies beyond, the complete unknown. That’s why Pluto deals with profound transformations, with letting go and with surrender to the greater cycles of life and death.

Chiron is much more accessible than Pluto – we call all access its energy, but unfortunately we have not been trained to delve into Chiron’s powers. Our ancestors, especially the hunter-gatherer type societies, were in a way much more connected to nature and with the energy in all its forms. In the past, every village had a medicine man or a Shaman.

The initiation into shamanism started after a so called shamanic illness, and now we start to better  understand the concept of “wounded healer” that Chiron has been associated with. It is only by paying attention to our wounds, that we can can get to wholeness, to healing, and even more, become a channel for the divine energy to flow into the material world as defined by Saturn.

But what is stoping us from accessing the divine energy that is all around? The reason we can’t easily access it is because we humans are a sum of conflicting, sometimes broken parts. Think of an engine of a car. If any part of the engine doesn’t work, the car doesn’t move. In the same way, we cannot be whole and move forward until we learn how to get all the parts of ourselves work and cooperate toward the same end goal.

Let’s come back to the mythology of Chiron. Because Chiron was born half human half horse, he was rejected and abandoned by his mother. Indeed Chiron transits always bring some sort of rejection, and people with strong Chiron in their chart are usually the outcasts of the society in their early life.

Fortunately, Apollo, the God of prophecy, healing, music and poetry adopted Chiron and taught him all that he knew. That’s why in astrology Chiron is the symbol of the teacher, the prophet and the astrologer. (Chiron, together with Uranus are the best  indicators of a gift for astrology in th natal chart).

Just like Chiron was half human, half horse, half mortal, half immortal, we are too a hybrid of matter and spirit. There are parts of us we accept and identify with, parts of us we despise and reject, and parts of us we don’t even acknowledge.

In unevolved state, Chiron is linked to guilt and bullying. The bully (both thare bully and the bullied are the signature of Chiron by the way) sees those parts of you that you are ashamed of and exposes them mercilessly. You are hurt when someone exposes your wound, but you are hurt because you haven’t learned how to integrate that wounded part of you. In this way, the evolutionary purpose of Chiron is to point towards whatever needs to be acknowledged, so it can be healed.

When you fully accept and integrate all the parts of yourself, when nothing can affect you anymore, the bullying stops. There’s nothing left to be ashamed about. You are you, the sum of all your parts. And when you accept yourself, the magic happens.  The divine energy starts flowing effortlessly through you, you become a channel from pure energy into physical form. You are healed, and you become healing.

Chiron’s retrograde cycle is a great time to tune inside ourselves and acknowledge that we are a sum of parts. What prevents us from unifying these parts is often some sort of energy blockage. It is critical we identify these blockages. Without unifying all our parts, including those we are ashamed of, we cannot find that kind of inner balance that leads to healing and spiritual growth.

The best and easiest way to work with Chiron starts with reframing the beliefs you have about the unseen energy around you. Do you believe it exists? Or you are not sure? Do you believe that is “maybe” exists? It’s worth knowing that the reason shamans can work with energy is because they believe – literally – in its existence.

Often for shamans there is nothing extra spiritual about the energy of the plant or of the animal, they literally believe that the plant’s spirit is real, just like the plant itself, and that’s why they are able to communicate and work with the spirit of the plant.

Right now during Chiron’s station, in the 1st week of July, you can become more easily aware of the energy around you and learn how to channel it into your body to unblock any blockage, fix anything that is broken, and unify the parts that make you the wholesome human being that you are.

You can practice working with Chiron’s energy with a classical body scan meditation (there are many axamples of guided body scan meditations on the internet). Put your awareness on each part of your body, from top to the bottom. Notice the place in your body where you feel low energy or restriction. How does that energy feel life? How does it look like? Do you notice any color, any feeling, any texture?

Now imagine a flow of pure bright energy pouring into the area you feel restriction from above (the top of your head) and from below (the sole of your feet). Notice the vortex of energy moving through your body, repairing the broken area.

Five Planets Retrograde In April – How To Survive Them

In April we have a record number of 5 (FIVE) planets retrograde. The Universe is asking us to “sort out” our life and redefine our reality and how we operate in it. This retrograde period is “three-dimensional” as it will ask us to look at ourselves (our thoughts, our communication – Mercury and our set of values – Venus) at our environment (Jupiter and Saturn) and at how everything  fits together in the grand scheme of things (Pluto).

5 retrograde planets

When is so much retrograde power in the air, we need to slow down any pay attention. Old patterns of thinking and old habits that no longer serve us will be brought to our awareness and challenged.

What is even more interesting is that 4 planets out of the 5 actually change direction in April. Yes, only Jupiter is already retrograde and won’t change direction. All the other planets station and change direction in April, increasing their influence few days before and after their station:

  • Saturn turns retrograde on April 6th at 27° Sagittarius
  • Mercury turns retrograde on April 9th at 4° Taurus
  • Venus turns direct on April 15th at 26° Pisces
  • Pluto turns retrograde on April 20th at 19° Capricorn

So if you have planets or angles around 27° Sagittarius, 4° Taurus, 26° Pisces or 19° Capricorn you will be especially affected. Pay attention especially if you have planets around 26°-27° in any Mutable sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) because the square between Venus and Saturn, – both stationary – will hit you hard.

Retrograde periods are good times to remember, re-assess , re-think, repair ,  restructure, re-invent  anything that needs a “RE” in your life.

And although the world will seem to “slow down”,  for some of us things will feel “just right”. Yes, if you have in your natal chart 4, 5 or even more planets retrograde then you will rather feel “in sync” with this energy, especially if you have a combination of Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn or Pluto retrograde.

For people with none, 1 or maximum 2 planets retrograde, things will be quite different. For example, I don’t have any planet retrograde. Everytime there are 4 or more planets retrograde I feel very tired, that’s why I learned to schedule holidays around the retrogrades and take the opportunity to recharge my batteries.

Now let’s have a look at how to deal with each of these retrogrades – focus on the one affecting you the most:

Saturn and Venus (26°-27° mutable signs)

I group them together because they are at the same mathematical degree and in square – so if you have planets around 26-27° in Mutable signs both Venus and Saturn stations will affect you.

The transit is quite heavy and will very likely ask you to sort out some emotional baggage from your life – old lovers, events from the past, buried feelings of rejection, isolation, and loneliness.

“The only baggage you can bring is all that you can’t leave behind” – Venus square Saturn will ask you to do some soul searching and decide what are you going to keep in this baggage. What are those key values that you cannot live without?

Anything else can be left behind. Remember, you will carry this luggage for the rest of your life (or at least until you have another potent Venus transit) – so you want to keep it light. How much are you willing to carry on your back from now on?

Now is your opportunity to really incorporate the Saturnine lessons. Your heart will be stronger and wiser after this process. And because Chiron is conjunct Venus, the opportunity for healing is real. Old wounds may the toughest to heal, but it is when we take the courage to face them, that we can release them and set ourselves free.

What to do about Venus retrograde: Make a list with your values, everything that is dear to you. For each value associate an object. How much does the object weight? Write it down – how many pounds/kilos? Now sum everything up. How heavy it is? What do you need to cut from that list so you leave only few items that you can carry on lightly?

Mercury (4° Taurus)

The lesson of this Mercury station is sustained focus. A Mercury Taurus retrograde cycle is here to teach us to focus our mind and be resilient against distractions.

What to do about Mercury retrograde: Make a list with all the worries, all the distractions, all the unfinished tasks that clutter your mind and affect your focus. Then “schedule” 1 hour per day to solve them. You may notice that by simply writing down your unfinished tasks and worries on a piece of paper, by “acknowledging” them, your mind can finally relax and focus on things that are more important. You can do this exercise anytime, best to do it around April 19th when Mercury and Sun will be in an inferior conjunction. Later in April you may discover you have found some innovative solutions for some of your worries, as Mercury will spend quite a lot of time near Uranus.

Pluto (19° Capricorn)

Pluto will activate the Jupiter Uranus opposition, making this station very confrontational – BUT also thanks to the progressive energy of Jupiter and Uranus, this station will give you an unique opportunity to achieve great progress in the area of your life (the house) transited by Pluto.

When direct, Pluto transforms matter and energy from one state to another. When retrograde, Pluto purges the “toxins” from the body, the mind, the spirit, so that a new cycle of life can emerge. What needs to be purged from your life?  Pluto stationary retrograde will ask you to allow natural death to take its course for anything that no longer serves you.  Let nature have its way. You will not only “survive” without this debrief, but you will be better equipped for the future.

What to do about Pluto retrograde: Keep a diary and write down in detail each event, each thought, each feeling that triggers a defense mechanism inside you. For each of these items, write down what are you afraid of losing if you “submit” to change. And then write down what could be the possible “benefits” for each of these changes.

Sun Opposition Mars

If you felt frustrated and annoyed in the last couple of days – an astral explanation for this is the recent Sun-Mars opposition.

sun-pposition-mars

Mars is retrograde, and actually we can only have an opposition between Mars and Sun when Mars is retrograde. This also means that Mars is at his closest distance from the Earth. If you look for him in the night sky, Mars is full of light now, like a knight in shining armor, brighter than ever!

So we have the hero – a knight called Mars, in an epic battle with his father, the Sun. The problem is Mars and Sun are at the greatest distance from each other. A physical confrontation is not possible. Still, the opposition to the Sun puts Mars to a test of strength. But what is Mars really fighting? Again remember Mars is close to the Earth, so all that he can really do is deal with “earthy” matters.

The magic of understanding the Mars-Sun opposition is realizing the hero’s (Mars) greatest opponent is his own shadow. His real battle is with the forces of his unconscious.

The role of the Mars-Sun opposition is to facilitate greater awareness of oneself and others, by challenging our “earthy” limitations. What is behind the anger? What are the material things that block you from having more initiative, from reaching your goals?

5 Planets Retrograde

In the last few weeks, having 5 planets retrograde was certainly not easy (now we have 4, as Jupiter turned direct on the 9th of May). Last time we had 5 planets retrograde was 10 years ago! Retrogrades are a time for reevaluating choices, and turning inwards. Things just don’t seem to work as they used to.

5-planets-retrograde

But – by coincidence – or maybe not, because there are not such things as coincidences in astrology 🙂 – during this retrograde period we have a very fortunate earth grand trine supported by Jupiter, Pluto, and several planets in Taurus.

With the retrograde period falling in the sign of Taurus – the sign of nature and matter – we have an amazing opportunity to slow down, tune into deeper connections – that otherwise get overlooked – with our surroundings and with ourselves, and understand at a deeper level the language of nature.
